So Near, Yet So Far – Silver Trauma, Underground; Cave Rescue
In June 2019 one of the largest and most complex cave rescues for 25 years in the UK took place in under the limestone of the Yorkshire Dales. In a secret cave, known only to 3 people in the world, one fit but elderly gentleman was significantly injured 5 pitches down.
Alistair Morris, the doctor on scene, will describe the challenges of medically managing a severely unwell patient in a location where any equipment request would take hours to arrive. Alongside him, a controller from the Cave Rescue Organisation will provide an insight into the logistical challenges of managing nearly 100 people for 17 hours to bring one person to the surface.
